Millersport Highway??
The death of the Amherst distance runner has brought up the question: Should distance runners continue to be allowed to run off campus? First of all I say that they should continue off campus training but they should restrict where the runners go. Boundries, basically a campus off campus, if you will. There should be no running allowed on Millersport Highway, It is dangerous to drive there, let alone run there. Whoever was leading that group needed to make sure everybody had a partner. This kid was alone and he turned around to see if a teammate was ok, and that he was still behind the group and he was the one who was hit. Some accounts of the story say the coach had been running with the group. That just shows an extreme lack of responsibility, and it does not reflect the competence of runners and coaches of other schools. Even though, schools such as West Seneca West, along with Amherst, obviously, have suspended off campus training. Orchard Park has decided to continue off campus training for the time being. Runners will continue to run, even though the thought of death will be on their minds. But the runners know it is perilous, but i guess its perilous to do anything nowadays. This isn't the only recent death though. Just before new year's eave, two female runners we're killed by a drunk driver before a race being held in ellicottville. As long as there is snow, runners will be on the roads almost everyday, and as long as they are on the roads, there will be the chance of an unfortunate accident. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased.
