LET'S GO!!!!
After a very long flight and a transfer from Honolulu to Hilo, we arrived at our Hostel after dark. This made me a little nervous because the area was industrial for Hawaii and it was raining. It all added up to being a bit unhappy when we pulled up to the Hostel, which was a bit dumpy to say the least. Luckily all of those worries were unfounded as the attendant, Mark, was great and we also met a few people who helped plan out the trip a little better.
Home Sweet Home.
Rainbow over the airport.
In the morning I woke up and went on a run over to Rainbow falls and back. It rained most of the time (as it tends to do in Hilo) but I was able to scope out the town as well. We checked out the beach and the farmer's market for a while before we went to dinner in town. It was a relaxing way to get our bearings for the remainder of the trip.
After dinner we decided to head over to the Kalapana Lava Flows at the end of Hwy 130. It was a short drive but we were excited to see some actual lava on the ground. Unfortunately the lookout we went to only gives you a far off glance at the actual flows and you can only see smoke rising from the ground in the distance. It was excellent to see the lava flows up close though. We stayed a little after dark ad it began to rain again so we headed back to the hostel to plan the rest of the trip.
